Strategy games provide experiences that require quick thinking, and forward planning from the gamer. They combine the unfolding tactics of classic games like chess, with more recent board games such as Risk. Usually focusing on a theatre of war context, players enjoy the tactical overview of the battle these games provide.
Turn Based strategy games are the video gaming equivalent of chess, risk and other board games. The player is presented with a tile based environment and a number of pieces which they can position and move. These games usually revolve around some military conflict. When the player directs an encounter to take place the comparative stats of vehicles, characters and current landscape are used to calculate the winner. Forest usually makes you harder to hit, whilst tanks do more damage than infantry.
Real Time strategy games present the player with a resource rich environment and task them with developing encampments and units more effectively than their enemies. Once created, troops can usually be arranged into groups and directed in real time. Because of these game's requirement for fast decisions from the player they were originally the preserve of the mouse and keyboard setup of the PC. More recently, intelligent control systems have brought them to home consoles and handhelds.
Valkyria Chronicles 2 expertly fits the PS3 game into the diminutive PSP. In doing so it shouts from the rooftops how good the under-appreciated original turn-based action strategy really was. The unsettling tension and unnerving decisions that arise from the nuanced play style continue to haunt me on the PlayStation Portable.
Spore trys to create a life opera, and should be ideal for my soulful videogame desires. But a lack of narrative, and an eventual reliance on old gaming tropes left me feeling like I hadn't been invited to the party.
My Xbox told me this game was good, but then it does have a strange sense of humour. Unlike other XBLA games like Battlefield 1943, 'Splosion Man is amateurish and not up to snuff in my little black book.
Overlord: Dark Legend Wii combines dark humour with an army of minions to good effect. Its comedy storyline is a little on the short side, but provides more than enough fun to keep you coming back to spread a little more chaos.
Dungeon Maker for DS has an inane story and feels more like work than play, but the cycle of toil and reward makes it strangely addictive.
This USA 1910 expansion contains all you need to revitalise your Ticket to Ride game: bigger, brighter cards, different destinations, and three new ways to play. The perfect companion to Ticket to Ride.
A search for 'poker' in the iPhone App Store will swiftly confirm that the iPlatform has not escaped the craze. A multitude of apps for playing on various online free-play sites, calculating the maths, timing your home tournaments or even watching manga girls take their clothes off as you beat them. It seems that whatever floats your (full) boat, something with a poker tie-in is probably available.
Sim Animals, like The Sims, offers the chance to nanny a group of demanding pets. Only here the pets look like pets rather than people. While not as big as The Sims 3 the animal angle offers plenty of innovations. But other than this it is business as usual for the series.
Talisman creates a varied role playing experience around a boardgame - character development, loot, equipment, spells, dice and cards combine to make this accessible and authentic. The complexity of the game is worth it but you do need children 10 or older and a lot of free time to play.
Poker Superstars III is a fast, well presented and enjoyable iPhone poker experience. At times limited by its format and haphazzard AI, it still manages to be a good choice for the novice/improving player looking for some poker glam to brighten up their lunch break.
