Dark Void Zero plays the nostalgia card in style. Coming to iPhone and iPod Touch from the DSi, it continues our trip to the alternate history of this supposedly cancelled NES game. Not scary, but hugely faithful to those unnerving 8-bit moments.

We Rule on iPhone places you in charge of a little kingdom, growing food and manufacturing goods for money and experience. Its toytown charm makes it fun for a while, but connectivity issues may mean missed opportunities when you can't access your kingdom. If Farmville is your idea of fun, this one's for you.

Angry Birds iPhone

Angry Birds is 59p on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and has sat at the top of the top 100 apps for weeks, with good reason. Charming design and a fantastic understanding of the iPhone's unique features created this success for developer Rovio.

My Fitness Instructor iPhone

British Military Fitness's iPhone app My Fitness Instructor is simple and effective. It delivers their training expertise where ever you are. High production values and the quality of the source material make working out not only more enjoyable but more effective.

Canabalt iPhone

Canabalt's simplicity and single minded game play is as endearing as it is addictive. Sound, and grey scale visuals combine to offer your senses all they need for you to survive. On Flash or iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, Canabalt is heart stopping exhilarating fun.

Final Fantasy II iPhone

Final Fantasy 2 is more evokative of later games in the series, and demonstrates the various elements that make Final Fantasy such fun. It might not be as polished as later Final Fantasys but it makes for a much more well rounded title. Finally, there's some semblance of an emotive storyline making it an enjoyable bitesized piece of considered gaming, even if it is still a little shallow.

We Rule iPhone

We Rule on iPhone is a gentle kingdom-building game, easily as addictive as Farmville on Facebook. While it lacks any real depth or meaningful objectives I found its persistent nature reason enough to care for my ongoing creations. Before long I was crafting my own iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch farming kingdom with as much care and attention as I had done with Rune Factory or Harvest Moon on the DS.

Eliminate iPhone

Eliminate on iPhone is a serious gamer's game. This simple but slick first-person shooter combines Role Play elements with hectic firefights for some brilliant multiplayer action. Whether played on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, this is a great challenge and really impressive.

Space Invaders Infinity Gene iPhone

Space Invaders Infinity Gene on iPhone blends classic shooting with your music library to create a strangely addictive experience. Like Space Invaders Extreme on the DS this understands both its history and new hardware perfectly, and delivers intelligently on both counts.

Final Fantasy iPhone

Final Fantasy is a nostalgic piece of gaming history. However, beyond the sentimentality of revisiting the past the grinding nature of the game exposes how far the series has come in the intervening years.

Mass Effect Galaxy iPhone

Mass Effect Galaxy, like the books, is a great way to extend your Mass Effect fix beyond the main cannon. On iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad this is unashamedly the Mass Effect Universe, although here with its wings severely clipped.

Poker Superstars III iPhone

Poker Superstars III is a fast, well presented and enjoyable iPhone poker experience. At times limited by its format and haphazzard AI, it still manages to be a good choice for the novice/improving player looking for some poker glam to brighten up their lunch break.

World Series of Poker: Hold'em Legend iPhone

World Series of Poker: Hold'em Legend joins the astronomical rise in popularity of poker over the last few years. Not only does it provide a game of real scope but it's also a lot of fun.

World Poker Tour Texas Hold'em iPhone

World Poker Tour Texas Hold'em! starts promisingly, with a slick, World Poker Tour video giving way to a clear, nicely built menu all topped off with a welcome voice over from the Poker Ambassador himself, Mike Sexton. But there pretty much ends the positive things I have to say about the game.

Fling! iPhone

Final slot in our round up of the best entertaining iPhone games you can buy for less than the cost of a decent daily newspaper belongs to the slickly presented, fiendishly addictive and hugely popular puzzler, Fling! This is possibly the simplest of the three games in our cheap game round up, although that is perhaps not too surprising given that it's the one iPhone puzzle game in the group - a genre that has proven again and again that 'simple done well' is king.

Minigore iPhone

Continuing our best 59p iPhone game theme, this week I've been playing about with Chillingo's pint-sized iPod Touch/iPhone shooting game Minigore. In summary, biting, black furry things run at you from all sides, and you, John Gore - a square-jawed, Clint Eastwood-esque, all-American hero - must fend them off by shooting their faces with your gun.

Doodle Jump iPhone

Bucking my recent trend towards covering the bigger iPhone and iPod Touch releases and more expensive titles available in the iTunes App Store, over the next three weeks I'll be having a close look at three popular games priced at just 59p. First up, the incorrigible bounce-fest that is Doodle Jump: a simple, cutesy, hand-drawn style jumping game that is far more satisfying and addictive than the sum of its parts might suggest.

FIFA 10 iPhone

Well, they kept us waiting, but for my money the release of the long awaited FIFA 10 on the iPhone/Pod demonstrates merited confidence and a commitment to entering a market with a polished product. Despite its late arrival at the party, FIFA 10 does exactly what we were all expecting - it oozes class and delivers unrivalled depth. While it's by no means a perfect game, it muscles the competition off the ball with some ease.

Spy Bot Chronicles iPhone

Spy Bot Chronicles is a follow-up to the Toy Bot Diaries trilogy on the iPod Touch and iPhone, which, you might remember from the early days of Touch Gamer, I thought was fantastic. This longer, richer, more fleshed out exploration of the superb universe created by developer IUGO has all the imagination, artistry and sophistication of the previous releases with only one small let down.

Real Football 2010 iPhone

Real Football 2010, the follow up to the much lauded first football sim to hit the App Store, feels more like an expansion of its predecessor than a fully fledged sequel, and in my opinion mostly fails to do due justice to the intense level of pre-release expectation. Despite some significant additions in terms of game modes and some evidence of tweaking and sprucing, a year on from taking the iPhone/Pod world by storm, this Real Football proves something of a damp squib.
