Our editorials are the inside track on the community. Here, we can go to town on a particular subject, where there isn't space in a review or guide. We have a chance to expand upon and mull over themes that have arrisen as we've played our games.
Sometimes it takes our kids to remind us what we enjoy. Watching my son play New Super Mario Brothers inspired me to pick it up again and have a go. I'd played it when it first came out but had got distracted by the next new game on my PS3, Uncharted 2 I think.
Choosing the right game is an important decision, they are not cheap after all. Once you have identified the games you set-up supports, you then need to choose what style of game best suites the people you play with.
A few months ago I wrote a review of the Japanese release of Bayonetta. But reading back recently I'm now having second thoughts. The game had left me uninspired so I wrote the review out of a desire to produce some early reactions. But along the way my discussion took me away from what was really important - that Bayonetta left me cold. It was a situation where I could see what the game was doing, but only more recently started to appreciate it.
Programming doesn't happen by mistake, it take people. People that know it exists, people that know they can do it, ultimately people who have managed to catch the bug. In a world where computing is ever more commodified, I take great joy in introducing schools and young students to the simple accessible wonders of programming outside the box.
Games connect us to exhilaration is various ways. I love mine to scare me. Although the shock, horror and gore are all pretty unnerving, nothing comes close to the sweaty palms of playing games that take you to ridiculously high places - InFamous, Mirror's Edge and Uncharted to name a few.
The Zelda games have been building an original world since 1989. Architecture, music and place thread through each Legend of Zelda Adventure and re-connect players at every visit. It's this mythic side to the series that makes it eminently replayable, as every new chapter encourages us back to the beginning to see how it all began.
It's not surprising that Escape from New York inspired the famous PlayStation franchise Metal Gear Solid. Although I still hold that technique and technology are key, here we see that it's all about the content and the emotional stories they tell.
Above everything, bingo is one of the most multiplayer social games you can play. Although these days I play a lot more video games, I still miss visiting our local bingo hall with my Granny.
I never realised how evocative sound could be. I suppose I should have, remembering the night I was near paralysed by the sound of children playing on rusted playground equipment - memories of Silent Hill flooded in to terrify me. Yet even this drunken encounter didn't drive home to me just how powerful sound could be.
Having admired the awesome writers and amiable style of The Escapist from afar, we are excited to announce that Family Gamer is going to provide a weekly column for their hallowed pages. The feature will be called Family Gamer Calling and starts on Sunday 10th January.
